Tabernacle is an installation built with students during a long week end around a centuries-old chestnut tree, as an artistic as well as a structural experiment.
The question was this:
Is it possible to create a space around the old tree without touching it only by using structurally negligible, finger-thin wooden wands for the construction?
None of the few hundred tall legs would stand up alone, but together they form a rigid structure in which the load is equally distributed between the members.
The dynamic space between the old trunk and the structure lends new quality to both.
With co-leader Fergus Feilden of Feilden Fowles.
